Guangzhou's
Population Close to Ten Million
The
population of Guangzhou, this capital city of South China's Guangdong Province
has reached 9.94 million, the largest among cities in the province, according to
the latest census.
The figure indicates that Guangzhou has become one of the exceedingly large
cities in China, next only to Chongqing, Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin.
In the past decades, Guangzhou's excessively rapid growth of population has been
effectively controlled, its population structure optimized and residents'
educational standards improved considerably.
The census shows that Guangzhou has 2.37 million families, averaging 3.21
persons per family, down by 0.62 from 1990.
It also shows that of every 100,000 people 9,309 have a college education, up
70.40 percent from ten years ago, while 23,968 people are primary school
graduates, down by 24.16 percent.
A great change has taken place in the population structure, with the number of
senior citizens rising to 598,300 from 397,200 ten year ago.
Guangzhou's urban population stands at 8.22 million, accounting for 83.79
percent of the total, a rise of 14.39 percentage points compared to last census

information about renters. The survey began in April and lasted for half a year,
said local sources.

county-level cities. It has a resident population of 6.85 million.
